Chinese New Year in Southend at The Royals

Get your red, white and gold glad rags ready for The Royals! On Saturday, 2nd February between 11am and 3pm, we will be hosting a very special celebration for Chinese New Year in partnership with the South East Essex Chinese Association. In our third year of hosting this event, we’re delighted to be welcoming the Year of the Pig, the 12th of the 12-year cycle of animals that appear in the Chinese zodiac.

This is a colourful, educational and exciting event that we are thrilled to support. This year, we’ve pulled out a whole hog of treats to make sure it’s fun for children and adults – a great event for all the family. Expect crowds, a spectacular parade, lots of activities for kids, and FREE performances. No need to “swine” there! Read on to find out what’s in store.

Date: Saturday, 2nd February

Time: 11am – 3pm

Location: Main Atrium, The Royals Shopping Centre

Ages: 3 – 9 years old

The Year of the Pig

Many of us may think of a pig as rolling around in muck… but not at Chinese New Year! Just as western astrologers believe that people born under certain star signs have particular personality traits, the Chinese zodiac animals also bestow unique characteristics. As a peaceful and tame creature, the pig is thought of as a considerate animal that brings affluence to people and is regarded as a sign of wealth and good fortune. Talk about positive vibes!

But there’s no need to break open the piggy bank for a great day. As a day filled with FREE activities, all families can embrace the good-feel fortunes in the centre. Besides, with an array of different stores offering amazing products and deals, there’s something for everyone to treasure. Pssst… although, we wouldn’t blame you if you went for a lovely treat, such as a beauty “oinkment”!

Chinese New Year Activities for Little Royalty

With the pig thought to bring a higher degree of intellect, we can think of no better way to celebrate than to take up some creative activities!

On Saturday 2nd February, there’ll be an exciting range of happenings for little “babes” to participate in, including lantern-making and mask-making workshops, pig-themed crafts and free Chinese themed face painting. Plus, with something for everyone, there will be a lively parade led by our traditional lion.

We also have a few extra surprises up our sleeves. Expect involvement with some local Southend companies, such as Kudos who will be running martial arts workshops and demonstrations, and Samantha Boyd School of Dance performing beautiful Chinese ballet dance demonstrations. Whoever said pigs couldn’t fly, or even dance?

Will you be trotting to our fun Chinese New Year celebrations at The Royals? It “swill” be great fun! Visit our Facebook Page and leave us a comment to let us know or send us a tweet via Twitter @RoyalShopping, or follow us on Instagram @theroyalsshopping. We look forward to seeing you!
